Frequently asked questions about Senior Eye Exams

How is a senior eye exam different from a regular eye exam?
Senior eye exams are specifically designed to address age-related vision changes and disease risks that increase after age 65. In addition to updating your prescription, we perform more comprehensive screening for conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration that become more common with age. We also review your overall health history—including medications, diabetes, and blood pressure—since these factors significantly impact eye health. The exam includes advanced imaging like retinal photos and OCT scans when indicated, plus a live telehealth consultation with a licensed optometrist who can remotely control our equipment to conduct a thorough evaluation. We take extra time to explain findings clearly and ensure you understand any changes in your vision or eye health.
Will Medicare cover my senior eye exam?
Coverage depends on what's being tested and why. Original Medicare Part B typically does not cover routine vision exams or refraction (the test that determines your glasses prescription)—those are usually out-of-pocket or covered by a separate vision plan like a Medicare Advantage plan. However, if you have a medical condition that needs continuous monitoring, we recommend seeing an in-person Optometrists. Our tele-health services are expanding, but at this time, we are limited in medical treatment that we can provide through billing insurance. It can get confusing, so we recommend calling us at 603-662-0389 before your appointment. We'll verify your specific coverage and let you know what to expect for costs so there are no surprises.
How often should seniors have eye exams?
Most seniors should have comprehensive eye exams annually, but your individual schedule depends on your risk factors and eye health. If you have diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or a strong family history of eye disease, you may need exams every 6 months or even more frequently. If your eyes are healthy with no significant risk factors, annual exams are usually sufficient. During your visit, we'll assess your specific situation and recommend a personalized follow-up schedule. Regular monitoring is crucial because many age-related eye diseases progress silently—catching changes early gives us the best chance to preserve your vision and quality of life.
What are the early warning signs I should watch for between exams?
Contact us right away if you notice sudden vision changes, flashes of light, new floaters (especially a sudden shower of them), a curtain or shadow across your vision, significant eye pain, or sudden loss of vision. These can signal serious conditions requiring immediate attention. Also, reach out if you experience persistent blurry vision, difficulty seeing at night, increased glare sensitivity, or colors appearing faded—these may indicate cataracts or other treatable conditions. Don't wait for your next scheduled exam if something feels off. We often have same-day appointments available for Mount Washington Valley seniors experiencing concerning symptoms, and early intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes.
What happens if you find cataracts or other age-related conditions?
We'll first explain exactly what we found using your images and test results, so you can see what we're seeing. For cataracts, we'll discuss whether they're affecting your daily activities like driving, reading, or enjoying hobbies—surgery isn't always immediately necessary, and we can often manage early cataracts by updating your prescription. When surgery becomes appropriate, we'll refer you to an experienced local ophthalmologist and coordinate all your records. For conditions like glaucoma or macular degeneration, we'll create a monitoring plan and explain lifestyle modifications that may help slow progression. If treatment is needed, we handle the referral and stay involved in your care, providing ongoing follow-up right here in the valley.
Can you help coordinate with my other doctors?
Absolutely—coordination is a key part of senior eye care. Many systemic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and autoimmune diseases affect eye health, and some medications can impact your vision. We'll send exam summaries to your primary care physician when requested, especially if we find diabetic retinopathy or other findings that relate to your overall health management. If you're seeing specialists like endocrinologists or cardiologists, we can share relevant information with them as well. Our goal is to be an integrated part of your healthcare team, ensuring everyone has the information they need to support your wellbeing. Just let us know which providers should receive your records, and we'll handle the coordination.

"The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. The technology there and teledoc process is really good. Carolyn(owner) is very friendly, knowledgeable and provides great advice on new glasses, even on ordering prescription sunglasses through a brand/company that they don't directly deal with. New glasses are created in a timely manner. Prices are reasonable and they work with my insurance company as well."
